Classroom Best Practices

1. Project the screen onto a large classroom display, preferably an interactive board
2. Sign in approximately 10 minutes before dismissal
3. Designate students not present on the student participation page
4. Open the home page and review any student prompts
5. Instruct students to prepare for departure but to keep something out to occupy themselves. Restrict classroom talking by students or keep to a minimum.
6. Teachers should position themselves in their doorways during the first few days or weeks to observe their own students' behavior in the classroom and other students in the hallway. Any student in the hallway has somewhere they should be so all staff should encourage purposeful walking by all students.
7. When a student name appears on the screen, that student should immediately collect all belongings, indicate the intention to leave the classroom by pressing the Depart button, and rapidly make their way to the listed location

These actions will have a negative impact on the flow of dismissal and will result in a longer dismissal duration for all parties involved - teachers, other staff, students, and parents. These actions should be avoided at all times.

• Failing to sign in daily at the proper time. When a classroom is not signed in at the start of dismissal the entire dismissal process begins by being delayed due to the first students not arriving at the proper location
• Individually determining whether a child should or should not leave the classroom. Silent Dismissal provides multiple configurations for student display which controls the overall all process flow. When a teacher elects to send a child before the name is displayed or to keep the child in the classroom after the name is displayed the overall flow of dismissal is compromised. It is important to send the students immediately upon viewing the name so that the overall process may be tuned correctly. It is equally important to not send any student from the classroom if the name is not displayed, e.g., sending a student to a bus when other bus riders are called, as that student may have a current day override setting.
• Failing to designate students who are not present. Loading rosters are dynamically generated each day during dismissal as students or groups are called. Failing to designate students who are not participating in dismissal results in other staff searching for children who will never arrive.
• Unnecessarily viewing multiple classrooms. The view scope for each classroom should be constrained to be as narrow as possible, including only those students that the teacher is overseeing and excluding all others. When the view is limited to only the directly affected students, changes in the visual display and audible notification reflect actionable events for the classroom. When additional classrooms are unnecessarily viewed, each change must then be evaluated for action resulting in slower execution. Moreover, necessary information may not be immediately visible on the screen without scrolling due to an abundance of superfluous information.
